Inside Ask Viq: Jev, 758 Questions and Better Decisions

"What are the prices?" "Does this work with BigCommerce?" "Show me my store's health check."
Three ordinary questions. Each one needs a different kind of reply. The first needs a real price from our price list. The second needs a page opened. The third needs your private store data, which a public website chat must never touch.
Ask Viq is the assistant on the Vortex IQ website. This article explains, in plain terms, what happens in the second between you pressing send and the reply appearing, how we keep it safe from misuse, and what it can and cannot do for you. For the wider platform story, read Why Jev Matters for Ecommerce: From Insight to Action.
The idea in one paragraph
Ask Viq never lets an AI model decide what our website is allowed to do. Our own code builds a short list of allowed outcomes for each message. An AI model called Jev picks from that list and tells us how sure it is. Our code then checks the pick, looks up the real page or reply, and only then, if an explanation is needed, asks a second model (Gemini) to write it from a page on our site. Nothing a model says becomes a web address, a price or an action on its own.
| Who decides | What they decide |
|---|---|
| Our code | What is possible: which pages exist, which filters are allowed, what counts as private data, and when to refuse. |
| Jev | What you meant: seven multiple-choice questions on every message, answered in about a quarter of a second. |
| Gemini | The words: only for explanations, only from a real page on our site. It also gives one second opinion when Jev is unsure. |
What happens when you press send

- Safety checks first. The message has to come from our own website, from a real browser, at a normal pace. If it contains something that looks like a password, an API key or an access token, we stop right there and ask you to remove it. No AI model ever sees it.
- Simple cases get a direct reply. "Hello", "who are you", "stop", our company address, who our CEO is, and "have you connected my store?" all have fixed answers written by us. No model is involved, so the reply is always the same and always correct.
- We shortlist the pages that could help. From 153 verified pages and sections on our website, our code picks up to 12 that could be relevant, and lists the 9 kinds of reply we allow.
- Jev decides what you meant. It answers seven multiple-choice questions: which page, what kind of reply, and whether you asked for a particular platform, role, business outcome, type of work or connector. It can only choose from the options we gave it, and it tells us how confident it is in each answer.
- A second opinion if needed. If Jev is unsure, or unavailable, Gemini answers the same seven questions once, with the same options. Our records show which path was used and why.
- We double-check the decision. A choice that was not on the shortlist is rejected outright. A choice below our confidence threshold becomes a clarifying question instead of a guess. Only then do we look up the real web address and filters for the chosen page.
- You get the reply. An answer written from a real page with its link, the right page opened with your filters applied, an honest note that something needs your signed-in workspace, or one clarifying question. Every reply also carries a flag that reads "no action was completed", because the public chat can never complete one.
- We keep a record for review. The question, the answer, the sources used and the route taken are stored privately for 30 days, with email addresses, phone numbers and links removed, so our team can spot patterns and fix content gaps.
How we protect it from misuse
A chat box on a public website is an open door. Here is what stands behind it.
| Threat | What we do |
|---|---|
| Floods and bots | Rate limits per visitor, browser verification, and one question at a time. A repeated identical question is answered once. |
| Requests from other websites | The chat only accepts messages sent from vortexiq.ai itself. Anything else is refused. |
| Oversized or malformed messages | Messages are capped at 1,000 characters and 10 KB. Anything outside the expected shape is rejected before processing. |
| Pasted passwords and keys | Detected and stopped before any model sees them. You are asked to remove them and try again. |
| Prompt injection ("ignore your rules and open this link") | A model can only pick from options we supplied. There is no option for an outside link, so the instruction has nowhere to go. |
| Made-up web addresses | Models never produce a URL. Every destination is looked up in our own registry of verified pages. An unknown ID fails closed. |
| Pretending an action happened | The public chat cannot connect stores, read private data or run jobs. If asked whether it did, it says plainly that it did not. |
| Leaked credentials | Our model API keys live on the server and are never sent to your browser. |
| Runaway costs | Request limits, an 8-second cap per model call and a 25-second cap per reply keep usage bounded. |
What you can ask it
Ask Viq is built for public questions about Vortex IQ and for finding your way around our website. Here is the range it handles today.
| You want to | Example | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Understand a product or feature | "What does a store health check do?" | A short explanation written from the relevant page, with the link. |
| Check prices | "What are the annual plans in GBP?" | Real figures from our price list, in the currency and billing period you asked for. Follow-ups such as "and monthly?" keep the context. |
| Go somewhere | "Take me to the pricing page" | The page opens. Nothing is written by a model. |
| Filter a catalogue | "Show only Klaviyo in your connector directory" | The directory opens with the filter applied, and the filter stays in the web address so the back button works. |
| Find workflows for your situation | "Show agency growth workflows for Shopify" | The workflow explorer opens with platform, role and outcome filters set. |
| Check a fact about us | "Who is the CEO?" "Where are you based?" | A fixed, verified answer. |
| Get started | "How long does onboarding take?" | An answer from the getting-started page, or an honest note if the page does not say. |
| Stay on the page | "Explain pricing but don't move me" | The answer appears in the chat and no navigation happens. |
| Change your mind | "Stop" or "cancel that" | "Stopped. No action was taken." |
What it will not do, and why that is a feature
- Read your store data. "Show my orders" or "what is my conversion rate" get a clear reply: that needs your signed-in workspace with the correct store selected. The public chat has no access, and says so.
- Take actions. "Connect my Shopify store" or "refund order 123" are recognised as actions and declined. The chat explains where that happens and confirms nothing has changed.
- Answer off-topic questions. Ask it the time, the weather or for a poem and it will explain its scope rather than guess a page.
- Invent details. If the page we would answer from does not confirm what you asked (how long a backup restore takes, for example), the chat says the information is not published rather than making up a number.
Each of these is a deliberate boundary. A public assistant that could be talked into reading private data or running jobs would be a liability, not a help.
How we tested it
Before switching Jev on, we wrote 758 test questions in 202 families. A family is one intent with several phrasings, so "what are the prices", "prcing" and "how much r ur plans" count as one scenario, not three.
- 464 questions cover public information, merchant onboarding and the private workspace journeys we plan to support next.
- 294 questions cover website destinations, kinds of reply, filters and follow-ups such as "open that page" or "and annually?".
These questions are a test suite, not something the chat runs on every message. They were not used to train Jev.
What the tests found, and what we fixed
- "Who are u" and "what is the time now" were met with unrelated page suggestions, because a search had found pages containing the words "who" and "time". We added proper conversational replies and stopped rejected pages from creeping back into the answer.
- "And annually?" after a monthly GBP price question lost the currency. We added explicit handling for currency, billing period and short follow-ups.
- "Have you connected it?" after "connect Shopify" needed a plain, truthful answer. We added one, written by us rather than a model.
- Two near-identical destinations (the pricing page and its plans section) were splitting Jev's vote. We removed the duplicate so the choice is clear.
- Some timing questions could not be answered from our published pages. Those are content gaps on our side, and they stay flagged until the pages are improved.
The final numbers
On 19 September 2026 we ran the full 402-case public suite against the live system. 397 passed the automated checks and 5 were flagged for human review. Of those requests, 314 were routed by Jev alone, 60 used the Gemini second opinion and 28 took a direct code path.
Jev answered its seven questions in 256 milliseconds at the median and 524 milliseconds at the 95th percentile. Complete replies took 302 milliseconds at the median and 3.9 seconds at the 95th percentile, because an explanation also needs a page fetched and text written.
These are automated checks from a test environment, not a promise that every answer is perfect. All saved answers remain available for human review, and four content flags stay open until the underlying pages are fixed.
What comes next: Ask Viq inside your workspace
Today, the amber box in the diagram is where the public chat stops. When you ask for your own data or an action, it tells you honestly that you need to sign in.
The next step is to bring the same assistant inside the Vortex IQ workspace for signed-in merchants. The routing already understands the difference between "explain the health check", "show me my health check results" and "run a health check now". Inside the workspace, with your account, store and permissions verified by our servers, those last two can become real: a read of your actual results, and a prepared action for you to approve.
Two rules will not change. A model will only ever pick from options our servers offered it. And nothing will be reported as done until our servers hold the receipt.

Frequently asked questions
What is Ask Viq, and which AI models does it use?
Ask Viq is the assistant on the Vortex IQ website for product information and navigation. Jev, a decision model from TypeSafe AI (version 1.13.0), decides what you meant. Gemini writes explanations from pages on our site and gives one second opinion when Jev is unsure. Greetings, our address, our leadership and stop requests are answered directly by our code.
Is Ask Viq safe to use on a public website?
Yes. It only accepts messages from our own site, limits how many questions a visitor can send, checks for real browsers, and stops any message containing a password or key before a model sees it. Models can only choose from options we supply, never invent a web address, and cannot read private data or take actions.
Can Ask Viq see my store or my account?
No. The public website chat has no access to any merchant data. If you ask about your orders, results or connections, it tells you that needs your signed-in workspace and points you there.
Can Ask Viq connect my store or make changes?
No. It recognises those requests, explains where the action happens, and confirms that nothing has been changed. If you ask whether it connected something, it says plainly that it did not.
What kinds of question does it handle well?
Product and feature explanations, prices in your currency and billing period, opening a page or a filtered catalogue, finding workflows for your platform and role, facts about the company, and getting-started questions. It also handles follow-ups such as "open that page" or "and annually?".
What happens if it is not sure what I mean?
It asks one clarifying question rather than guessing. If a page on our site does not confirm the detail you asked for, it says so instead of inventing an answer.
Does Ask Viq run 758 questions for every message?
No. The 758 questions are our test suite: 464 covering public, onboarding and workspace scenarios and 294 covering website navigation. They were used to test and improve the assistant, not to train Jev, and they are not sent with your message.
How fast is it?
In our 19 September 2026 test run, Jev decided the route in 256 milliseconds at the median. Complete replies took 302 milliseconds at the median and 3.9 seconds at the 95th percentile, because an explanation also needs a page fetched and text written. These are test-environment figures, not browser timings.
Is my conversation stored?
Accepted exchanges may be stored privately for 30 days for quality review, with email addresses, phone numbers and links removed. Our team uses them to find content gaps and add test cases. They are not used to train a model automatically.
